Delaware Technical Community College’s Jack F. Owens Campus in Georgetown held its annual Starry, Starry Night Gala on April 25, entertaining approximately 200 guests with live music and a variety of activities. The event raised more than $143,000 through sponsorships, donations, and ticket sales to support student scholarships and classroom equipment.
The funds from the gala will help students enrolled in workforce training certificate programs and international study abroad opportunities. The proceeds will also be used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for classrooms and labs.
The evening began with a cocktail reception followed by remarks from Dr. Bobbi Barends, Delaware Tech Vice President and Owens Campus Director, as well as Tyesha Marine, a veterinary technology student who has received scholarship support. “There have been times when things felt overwhelming trying to figure out how to pay for textbooks, lab supplies, uniforms, and everything that comes with being a full-time student, but I knew that continuing my education would open doors not just for me, but for my daughter as well,” said Marine. “Receiving scholarships has truly been a blessing in my life. These scholarships have helped relieve financial stress and allowed me to focus on what matters most — learning, growing, and becoming the best veterinary technician I can be.”
Barends thanked attendees for their continued commitment to the college: “As Delawareans, I know that most of you have encountered a Delaware Tech graduate in your day-to-day activities, and I hope it makes you proud to know that you have helped students like Tyesha on their educational journey—a journey that provides a dynamic workforce for our state.” Formal entertainment included live music by Legacy Band along with sing-alongs led by The Piano Man and art sessions guided by John Donato.
Major sponsors included Carl M. Freeman Foundation; Massey’s Landing Park Inc.; ALOFT AeroArchitects; Chesapeake Utilities; and Diamond Mechanical Inc. Barends said: “Our sponsors, donors, and friends are greatly appreciated…it is through their generosity and support we are able to deliver on our mission of keeping students at the center of everything we do.” Over 50 volunteers contributed time alongside the planning committee.
Dr. Mark T. Brainard stated: “The planning, hard work, creativity…needed to pull off an event like this requires a dedicated group of employees…and we are extremely grateful for their commitment.” Next year’s gala is scheduled for April 24.
