Starting Jan. 1, the cost of hotel stays in Sussex County will be 3 percent more expensive bcause of a new tax approved by the County Council in November, but that does not apply to short-term rental properties such as AirBNBs.
That does not sit will with hotel and motel owners in the county.
Julie Cummings, a county motel owner, told the Delaware Republic she thinks the tax should apply to all overnight lodging businesses in the county – including hotels, campgrounds and AirBNBs. The new county tax is in addition to an 8-percent tax already charged by the state on hotels and motels.
The tax is restricted in how it can be spent – the council limited it to set projects, including ‘beach nourishment,’ water quality improvements and economic development.
